This is an impressive design challenge -- the artist worked to create a 3D object that has as little resemblance as possible to the very cohesive image you get from the shadow at a particular angle.

Awesomeness. Reminds me of a Mathematical Recreations column a while back about constructing a digital sundial--as in, an object whose shadow would display the time in digital form down to the minute. I think they'd determined it was theoretically possible but not actually done it, or something close to that.

I once stumbled into an art museum displaying an exhibition of an artist that used shadows in this way. It blew my head wide open.

I wish I could remember the artists name.

One entire room had "randomly strewn" blocks all over the wall. But the way the wall was illuminated with spotlights, it created shadows of silhouettes.

Stunning.
