[travel] Final camera contenders
Jan. 14th, 2009 06:25 pmThanks everyone for the followup on the camera decision.
I've narrowed my travel camera choice down to two excellent options.
The Canon 880 and The Lumix TZ-5
Both are very highly rated. They both meet my criteria. The only tradeoff is that the TZ-5 is somewhat bigger (it barely fits in my pocket and takes some effort to pull out since it's not completely flat) but it has an awesome 10:1 zoom, while the Canon 800 easily slips in and out of pockets but only has a 4:1 zoom. (Any camera I buy must satisfy the "fits in my pocket" rule... while a full SLR takes better pictures, it only takes better pictures if I actually choose to bring it with me, and I find I'm a lot less likely to bring something that I have to dangle around my neck like a big "I'M A TOURIST" sign.)
I'm guessing that the Canon 800 will be better for general use, but the TZ-5 will be better for travel, where I will usually be wearing big-pocketed cargo pants.
