Bringing high fashion to geeks...
Dec. 18th, 2007 02:09 amGeeks are not known for their high fashion sense. Geek fashion statements range from "I am going to wear this dirty old shirt repeatedly because I don't care", to "I am going to wear this dirty old shirt repeatedly on purpose to express my low opinion of the importance of clothing", to "I'm going to wear this (xkcd / ubuntu / obscure futurama reference) shirt to broadcast how geeky I am"
However, the high fashion world basically ignores geeks and vice versa.
Or so I thought.
A couple of days ago, while browsing Nordstrom Rack with
frogpyjamas, I spotted a sweater that looked really interesting. It had a horizontal stripe pattern that was very intricate. The pattern was on several length scales, and the dominant pattern was a sine wave that varied in frequency sinusoidally. The sweater was too big (and too expensive) for me, but I was intrigued enough to look up the designer's name.
Her name is Jhane Barnes. She's the only fashion designer I'm aware of who has a full-time mathematician and a full time computer programmer on staff.
Here's a quote from her website: ( http://www.jhanebarnes.com/direct/direct.php )

And the shirts. Be sure to zoom in. The magic is in the details.

I look at these and see intricacies and details that excite both my left and right brains. Yum.
Thus, the problem all along between geeks and high fashion was that geeks could not be brought to fashion. However, high fashion can be brought to geeks.
Perhaps you google people on this list might be able to convince her to come give a talk at google, and then I could go meet her.

She has amazing designs. Currently $200 is well above my shirt-buying threshold. However, if I had 2x my current disposable income, I'd probably buy several of her designs.
