mattbellToday I saw an amazing demonstration of the Middle Eastern art of marbled paper at the Singapore Asian Cultures Museum. Marbling involves dropping bits of dye onto a pool of water, modifying them using various tools, and then pulling the dye off in situ onto a piece of paper.
It allows both abstract and representational complex designs to be created rapidly. In part, what makes this possible is that this physical system implements many aspects of the basic Photoshop canon -- in addition to the paintbrush and a splatter-like airbrush (with various brush sizes) you have a wide array of distorting and smudging tools (again, with various brush sizes). It's glorious.
The hot hot marbling action starts at 1:10. Prior to that it's just filler.

It's true that it would be hard to do, say, a painting of a man on a horse, or most representational subject matter, but it does do certain types of subject matter really well.
