"It's just like Rock Band!"
Sep. 13th, 2008 12:31 amApparently the video game Rock Band is getting so popular that people are emulating the game in real life by forming their own rock bands! Once again life imitates video games... just like that time the group at Burning Man set up a real Pac-Man maze.
So anyway, I went to go watch this rock band tonight. It was amazing how well they captured the spirit of the game. They had a woman singing, a couple of guys playing electric guitars, and a guy banging on a drumkit. Strangely, they also had a guy on a synthesizer keyboard... so I guess they're taking some liberties with the "rock band" game concept. In any case, they had stage lighting and smoke that look just like they do in the game, and we as the audience played our part by waving our arms around, clapping and cheering. Each player in the rock band had designed their avatar to have awesome hair, costumes, and attitudes. Each one had made different choices, but the overall look was thematically consistent, so it was fun just to watch them all bang on their instruments.
From what I could tell, the rock band was doing well. They had earned enough points to buy a nice bus that was parked outside the concert hall, so they're apparently not too shabby. In any case, they played a really long set that was fun but somewhat mixed in quality. I heard that the instrument players got tired of playing with their singer, so they replaced her with someone else a little while ago. Unfortunately, the new singer's voice wasn't as good. She tried to use her star power to cover up the bad parts, but she didn't quite know how to utilize star power properly, so she sometimes just ended up looking goofy. The guitarists were good though, and they built up lots of star power and then released it during some awesome solos. I think they got about three and a half stars, but since the results weren't posted at the end, I wasn't sure.
