6 months of Mac OS
Jul. 14th, 2007 12:09 amI've had a Mac Pro for 6 months after having used Windows machines all my life.
I really like Mac OS, and feel like it's generally superior to Windows, but there are a few things that piss me off.
1. Detached menu bars. The menus should be a part of the window, not way up at the top of the screen. It's silly to have an itty bitty window in the middle of the screen, with the menu bar way far away. It doesn't make sense from a UI perspective, and it means I'm doing a lot of extra mouse motion. And it's all made way worse by the fact that I have 2 monitors, so sometimes the menu bar is way over on the other monitor, like 10 inches away from the window I'm using.
2. No variety of directory views. On Windows, you can view the files in your directory as a list, icons, thumbnails, or even a filmstrip. On Mac OS, a folder full of images is just a collection of faceless identical icons. You have to open them all up in iphoto just to tell what the hell they are.
3. The only way to open the DVD drive when it's empty is by holding down the F12 key... and that fact is buried deep in the documentation. WTF?
4. The one-button mouse is very restrictive. I can handle the mental complexity of two buttons, thanks. And the keyboard, while pretty, is uncomfortable to use. So now I have this gruddy Dell keyboard and Logitech mouse, and I enjoy both of them.
I'm sure there are things I'm not aware of that mitigate problems 1-3 here. Any ideas?
