[travel] Last weekend's adventures in the Pinnacles and Arroyo Seco

The Pinnacles is a hilly desert area containing the remnants of a volcano's core.  It's about two hours south of San Jose.   It's far enough from civilization that there's practically no light pollution, and as a consequence the night sky is completely intense.  During the day it's quite (though not oppressively) hot, and it becomes a playground full of rocks to explore and climb.

Arroyo Seco is (unlike what its Spanish name implies) a very wet canyon that can be explored during the late summer months when the flow of water is not too intense.  Owing to the non-waterproofness of my camera, I didn't get too many pictures, but the experience of swimming, jumping and sliding my way down the water's path was a great deal of fun, at least until it became late enough in the day that the sun no longer reached the bottom of the canyon.
