I've long suspected that if cars weren't status symbols and weren't loaded with convenience and safety features, they'd actually be extremely cheap. It turns out that this is true. An Indian businessman who wants to bring cars to everyone is going to do so for $2500 per car.

I can only imagine what this is going to do to traffic in places like India and China!
Come to think of it, I'm surprised the oil companies didn't try to do this. An oil company could sell those cars and their gas using a razor/razorblade business model, given that people typically spend $1500-$2000 a year in gasoline.
It's not the direction I'd want the world to go environmentally, but it's interesting to be aware of these possibilities.
