The answer:

Going up there involved several minutes of negotiating with a security guard. It was also only one of many amazing things that happened that day. Petra is one of the most incredible places I've visited, and I've had the good fortune of meeting up with a couple of travelers to enjoy it with.
On various occasions, we've basically had this enormous ancient city almost completely to ourselves.
I'll have a much longer entry on Petra later, with details of my other adventures there as well as advice on visiting...
... but for now I'd like to point out that if you're reading this, you could be here (or almost any of the other places I've written about) in under 24 hours. There's just so much out there to see.
